LBRDI Chapter 63

Suit Yourself

“You’re wrong to say that,” He Xing jammed his arms around the little black and white fatty. “How do you know I don’t have a lover?”

Lu Yuan’s short little tail wagged and patted Shen Mian with his paw pad. “Dean, Dean.”

Shen Mian, who had been pretending he had not heard anything, had to answer. “Hm?”

Lu Yuan, “Let’s record it and sell it to the press as an exclusive! We’ll be able to make a fortune for the centre.”

He Xing: ?

“I’m still here, right? And you’re saying that to my face? Could your dean be…”

Shen Mian pondered. “Good idea.”

He Xing: ??

……

Not long after Yan Tan returned, Qiming Childcare Centre’s final exams arrived.

Since Shen Mian was the only teacher at the centre and the cubs were in a low grade, there were only four subjects that they had to be tested on- Written Language, Dragon Genus, Maths, and Ideology.

The progress of the cubs barely caught up with the new second grade students from other centres. Apart from the fact that Shen Mian himself lectured quickly or because the other centres wouldn’t rush the cubs to learn from too many books, at this age, it was important to learn more about oneself and the other races.

The four subjects were tested over two days; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The first course was a relatively simple written language course, with exam papers focusing on simple grammar and vocabulary.

When Shen Mian himself was a student, he didn’t like the way teachers looked at the exam papers, so he leaned on the lectern and didn’t walk down.

Xing Fei and Gian started writing on the written language exam paper like fish in water and the pens in their hands wouldn’t stop. While Lu Yuan and Rhein were still struggling on the first page, the other two little dragon cubs had already flipped the page.

Hearing the sound of paper flipping over, Lu Yuan and Rhein abruptly looked up, both unable to help but feel nervous- how much time had passed? Are they doing it too slowly?

Shen Mian glanced at the clock at the back of the classroom. “There’s no need to rush, there’s still forty minutes left.”

The exam time limit for the dragon cubs was one hour. If it took too long, the dragon cubs wouldn’t be able to sit still. Not even half the time had passed by now, it was Xing Fei and Gian who wrote too fast. Lu Yuan and Rhein wrote at a normal speed.

[The Missing Road: Lu Yuan and Rhein are just like me… Every time I take an exam, once I hear the clattering sound of paper flipping, I get extremely nervous, to the point of exploding!]

[Seventh Legion Super God: True true, me too, and every time, I feel that everyone is so calm. They all know how to do the test and I’m the only one who doesn’t know anything. When the scores come out, you find that you are indeed the only one who doesn’t know how to do it… maybe I’m just a flunkie.]

[Xue Lulu: Different civilisations have the same reality.]

When the hour was over, the four little dragon cubs came up with their exam papers and placed them one by one in Shen Mian’s hand.

Xing Fei and Rhein had the prettier handwriting, while Gian and Lu Yuan were not as nimble with their pens as they were in their dragon forms, so their papers were definitely not as nice as the other two cubs.

But Lu Yuan’s writing was too ugly.

He Xing looked at it for a moment from the side and couldn’t help but speak. “Lu Yuan.”

The little black and white fatty looked worried. “Huh?”

He Xing, “Did these characters get fat from eating? Did you notice that you can’t even fit one in a single grid?”

Lu Yuan leaned over and looked at it for a long time. “I call this domineering!”

Shen Mian didn’t even raise his eyes. “Mn, domineering. Domineering to the point that marks are deducted from the exam paper.”

Lu Yuan, “Ying…”

He Xing had been studying the cub’s papers and slowly looked up when he heard the voice, suspicious. “Why does the sound Lu Yuan made seem so familiar?”

Gian raised his paw to solve the problem for Uncle He. “Because Uncle He often…”

He Xing picked up Gian. “Let’s go, Uncle will take you to eat snacks.”

Shen Mian put the exam papers into a zip-lock bag and smirked. “You should know.”

[Xue Lulu: Gian really is super straightforward hahahahaha.]

[Listen to the boat: His highness: Come on, stop it, cub.]

[Seventh Legion Super God: Gian tearing down the stage hahahahaha.]

……

The last exam was finally finished at 4 o’clock in the afternoon the next day. Shen Mian didn’t grade the papers in the meantime, so the little dragon cubs wouldn’t always come and ask questions.

Since the semester was over, Shen Mian wanted to take the dragon cubs out for a spin. There hadn’t been an autumn trip yet this semester, so they could go shopping while the weather on Water Star hadn’t completely cooled down.

Shen Mian would sometimes take the dragon cubs out, just for picnics and walks in the small parks around the area and wouldn’t take them too far away. Rhein was fine, but Lu Yuan, Gian and Xing Fei rarely went out. Most of the time the scope of their activities were limited to the centre, which was too confining.

Gian was a little excited. “Are we going shopping?”

Shen Mian nodded. “Shall we go to the mall? It has a restaurant, a holographic game hall, a library, a playroom… and there is also a large amusement park next to it. Do you want to go?”

What kind of dragon cub didn’t want to go out and play?
The little dragon cubs, who had been holding back in the centre, nodded their heads desperately.

Xing Fei held Shen Mian’s hand. “Can I go as well?”

“Of course you can,” Shen Mian stroked the little girl’s hair. “Everyone’s the same. We are going outside to play for a whole day so we can’t take tomorrow off. Rhein, when you go home tonight, can you discuss it with your father?”

Rhein was timid but yearning for the outside world at the same time. “O-okay!”

Shen Mian called Lu Yuan’s parents and they readily agreed- in fact, most large, strong dragon cubs were in a free-range state even at home, which meant that Lu Yuan used to always get into trouble and his parents were only a little bit more worried. But with the dean, there was nothing to worry about and there was also His Highness, the Crown Prince. They were perfectly capable of taking care of the alive and kicking Lu Yuan.

As he was about to hang up, An Long said, “After several conversations with you, both Lu Yuan’s mother and I realised our shortcomings, so we enrolled in a childcare class and passed the exam. I hope we can both get along well with Lu Yuan these holidays. Please put in a good word for us in front of Lu Yuan.”

Lu Yuan’s mother also softly spoke, “We were watching your live broadcast while in class and I realised that we really failed as parents. We have been absent in Lu Yuan’s upbringing, but we’ve really changed this time. Please let Lu Yuan get in touch with us more.”

An Long was extremely ashamed. “I’m not as good as my wife.”

Shen Mian put the exam papers collected today into the cabinet. “Of course I will. Lu Yuan actually loves you two very much. As long as you respond to him, you will definitely receive his feedback.”

Shen Mian hung up the call and packed the things they needed for when they went out. Since they were taking the dragon cubs to the mall, they had to equip them with a communicator that was linked to his and He Xing’s quantum computers, so that they could send a voice message to the linked quantum computer. The linked quantum computer could also locate the communicator.

Shen Mian sorted the four communicators and put the small black communicator that belonged to Yan Tan back in the box.

e/n: 😭

He Xing took the itinerary and reported to Shen Mian while walking around him. “We’ll leave at nine, arrive at Snowdome Plaza at about nine twenty-five and go to the mall next door…”

Shen Mian caused him to stumble a bit because he couldn’t stand it any longer. “Just speak, why are you circling around me?”

“Because I like you,” He Xing took it for granted. “Isn’t it normal to circle around your lover?”
He now understands those alphas who fell in love, the lover that he could finally talk about was like a carefully brought home treasure. He couldn’t wait to circle, rub against and kiss the treasure, once infected with the taste of each other’s pheromones. Once they got a taste of each other’s pheromones, they would have the satisfaction of marking each other.

The dragon had found his treasure and he wanted to assert his sovereignty, but he desired to be recognized by the treasure first.
He wanted to obtain but also wanted to be obtained.

Shen Mian, “…”

He Xing leaned in and kissed his side profile. “I like you.”

Shen Mian’s face was cold and He Xing was ready to be scolded, but who knew that Shen Mian just looked at him for a moment and turned his head?

“Suit yourself.”

He Xing was stunned for a while and suddenly he was happy for a bit, trying to hold Shen Mian’s hand. He leaned into his ear and asked, “Are you spoiling me? Are you?”

Shen Mian, “…”
So tempted to shrink this thing back into a dragon cub and stuff it in my pocket.

……

The following day, the cubs gathered at the centre’s entrance.

Each dragon cub carried a bag and held hands excitedly.
Gian took the communicators Shen Mian gave him and distributed them one by one to the little dragon cubs.

The suspension car was parked at the centre, which was already gathering dust. It was finally put to good use, as this large caravan could accommodate all the cubs at the nursery.

Gian allocated seats to all the little dragon cubs once they were outside, then climbed into the car, puffing and stuck his head out of the car door. “Dean, we’re seated.”

Shen Mian checked the centre’s front door one last time and sat in the same row as the dragon cubs. After fasting their seatbelts, the suspension car smoothly cut into the air track.

Snowdome Plaza was one of the busiest areas on Water Star and was named after Water Star’s iconic building- Snowdome Mall. The mall looked like a snow-capped mountain on the outside. On the top floor was an observation deck restaurant that only received one order per day and only had one table in the entire restaurant. The high prices completely plotted against/killed wallets.

The mall’s underbelly was full of entertainment venues and activities for adult dragons and humans alike. The normal mall was above ground level.

Shen Mian and He Xing put on masks after they got off the car and led the little dragon cubs off. Standing in front of the huge sign, Lu Yuan shouted, “Dean, I want to go to the third floor to see the starship models and the simulated stars!”

Rhein timidly sat on Shen Mian’s shoulder. “I-I’m staying with the dean.”

Gian looked up at Shen Mian. “Dean, I want to go to the department store. How about you, Xing Fei?”

Xing Fei hesitated for a moment before reaching out and pointing at the sign. “Dean, I want to go to Happy Ocean World. I saw that that place has trusteeship, can you put me there?”

Shen Mian lowered his head. “Of course.”

He Xing thought for a bit. “How about this? I take Xing Fei and Lu Yuan upstairs, then we gather at Ocean World on the third floor at 10:35.”

He knelt down and said, “Will Xing Fei go with uncle? If you want to come out, just use the communicator to send me a voice message, okay?”

Xing Fei smiled at him. “En.”

He Xing took her and Lu Yuan by the hand and took the two little dragon cubs to the direct elevator outside the mall.

Shen Mian carried Rhein and Gian and went to the first floor through the entrance.

In addition to the department store, there was a bookstore on the first floor. To get to the department store, you had to pass by the bookstore, which seemed to be having some kind of event today. It had a shelf by the entrance and a billboard next to it.

Gian glanced at it and couldn’t move, “Dean, Rhein, can we go take a look at the books on that shelf?”

Shen Mian asked for Little Rhein’s permission and he walked over with Gian in tow.

The billboard read: “Today’s Deal: 20% off Parenting Education!”

Parenting education?
Shen Mian had a bit of an ominous feeling in his heart.

Gian was a little shorter than the shelf and after standing in front of it for a while, he couldn’t help but take a book from it and read a few pages before looking expectantly at Shen Mian. “Dean, can I buy this?”

Shen Mian lowered his head to look at the book the little dragon cub had set in front of him.

The cover read “Eighteen Essentials for Communicating with Cubs.”

The bold characters on the belly band: Best-selling classics! A must read for parents recommended by experts!

Shen Mian, “…”

  1. I finally caught up 😭 I actually started reading last week but it took forever. I really like the novel! 😊
And I feel like half the people don’t even know what competition you were talking about (I didn’t either) or just feel like the task is too daunting. Personally, I don’t think I could write a cringy story in less than 500 words 🤔 Actually, I’m not even sure what would count as cringy …

    1. Ah so sorry I thought people could see it on the side but it’s okay. It doesn’t necessarily have to be 500, as long as you think it’s enough it’s fine :D. Sorry if I didn’t make the competition clearers though.

  2. Thanks for the chapter! Going on a field trip with kids, especially curious, inquisitive ones, is really not easy. Glad there are 2 adults… & communicators. Maybe it should be a standard for kids under a certain age, so you can gps the heck out of the runners who always manage to get themselves out of sight & into trouble, lol. Teachers have my sympathy…

    Welcome karira! 😀 *gives cookie*
As for that comp, I'm not sure if 2 weeks was enough… or maybe it's because 1) "cringey" is quite vague and 2) among 100%, a large percentage are lurkers/people that don't write xD I'm part of the later category. Consider me in though if you ever do sth like that for poems. But in that case, the odds of participation would probably be even lower XDDD

  4. I have to say, I was a bit scared off by the writing prompt on the competition.
It’s not that I couldn’t do it, but I also don’t used Discord, so the prize would be useless to me. 乁( •_• )ㄏ
What if I won? I’m sure there’s someone else who would love it though.

Thank you for this dose of sweetness. This is one of my favorite novels I’m reading right now.
