LBRDI Chapter 74

A String of Little Dragon Cubs

It was past 4:40 when the cubs finished battling each other. After forty minutes of high-intensity play, the cubs were so hot that they gradually went from bouncing around to fancily collapsing.

Except for Xing Fei and Qin Yi.

The two little dragon cubs drove around the mock battle arena in the laser armour car for a few minutes.

The little Duke got in and out and was not hot at all. After re-entering her human form, she didn’t even bother taking off her jacket and sat on the heated car shell to talk with Xing Fei.

Yan Tan and Livia were different. The two little dragon cubs were hot as hell.

That’s when the ice-cold little gem dragon became the best radiator- Yan Tan hugged Gian’s big tail and felt the crystal spines sticking against his face, sucking away the heat.

Gian was standing in front of Shen Mian with Livia, waiting to wipe his face, when he suddenly felt a weight on his tail and turned back to find a large black pendant on his tail.

“Is Yan Tan not feeling well?”
The little gem dragon crouched down, his short paws rubbing Yan Tan lovingly.

Yan Tan wriggled forwards and hugged Gian. “Gian, you’re so nice and cold.”

The little gem dragon suddenly realised. “So I can be used like this.”

Gian dragged a somewhat heavier Yan Tan and invited Livia, who was a little sweaty. “Do you want a hug? I’m very cold.”

Livia looked at Yan Tan, who had no image, and was helpless. “…Thank you, but I’m not particularly hot right now.”

Shen Mian picked up Yan Tan, who was almost lying on the floor and patted the dust off. “Come on, go wash your hands and get ready for afternoon tea.”

He Xing raised his hand. “Dean.”

Shen Mian looked at him. “?”

He Xing, “I’m hot, can I get a hug?”

Shen Mian didn’t hesitate at all. “You can.”

He put Yan Tan, who was in his arms, into He Xing’s. “Here, nice and cool.”

Yan Tan, who suddenly changed places shook his tail. “I don’t want Uncle He, I want the Dean.”

He Xing, “…”

Marshal He put down the little black dragon and politely replied, “That’s great. I also only want the dean.”

The little dragon cubs lined up to wash their hands and Shen Mian checked the time. It was almost 5 o’clock and He Xing’s parents still hadn’t come, so he asked He Xing, “Do you want to send a message to your parents.”

The cubs had been active for most of the day and he wanted them to eat something, except that He Xing’s parents had said they were coming to join them for afternoon tea, and it would be rude for them to eat in advance.

He Xing glanced at the quantum computer. Vick had sent him a message five minutes ago alerting him that the Emperor and Empress had arrived with a large bag of desserts and were now in the living room.

He Xing put away his quantum computer. “They’ve already arrived. I didn’t see the message that Vick sent just now.”

Shen Mian paused. “Then I’ll bring the dragon cubs over.”

He Xing tidied his clothes and leaned over to kiss him on the cheek, quietly asking him with a small smile, “Are you nervous?”

Shen Mian rolled down his sleeves and smoothed out the folds in his clothes.

He Xing hugged him and swayed, and softly said, “They definitely like you a lot. That’s why they want to see you so much.”

“Because you’re so good.”

Shen Mian indifferently said, “I was just thinking about what to have for dinner. Do you eat barbeque?”

The purely carnivorous beast, He Xing, “Yes!”

……

His Majesty and Her Highness were sitting upright in the living room. Vick was sitting off to the side, wooden-faced and had been sitting with the most important couple in the entire empire for several minutes now. His Highness and Dean Shen and the bunch of little dragon cubs still hadn’t come over.

Vick slowly stood up. “I’ll go ask…”

He Yi waved his hand. “It’s fine. He’s probably playing with the dragon cubs, so he didn’t see your message.”
When the current emperor of the empire, He Yi, was young, like He Xing, he had risen step by step to the rank of marshal by military merit, eventually taking over the throne from the previous emperor.

Lu Xianzhi also gently persuaded him to sit down. “There’s no need to rush. We’ll wait until the little dragon cubs have had enough fun. We’re not in a rush either.”

Lu Xianzhi- He Xing’s mother. Once the Marshal of the First Legion, she nearly died on the front line and chose to retire from the army because her body was so damaged that she couldn’t participate in combat. This beauty, who you couldn’t see the traces of time on, was the current empire’s only princess- His Majesty the Emperor was an only child, so all the princesses, who were originally named due to blood ties, had been demoted to Dukes and Earls.

t/n: I think I finally got it. 亲王 (Qīn wáng) is the rank that is second to the emperor and in English, it would be prince, but she is a woman so I said princess, but calling her princess is weird so I substituted it with Empress.

Lu Xianzhi patted the pile of stapled papers in her hand and was a little nervous. “I don’t know if Shen Mian will like the gift I prepared for him.”

He Yi immediately bragged, “The gift my wife prepared must be very thoughtful… Didn’t you prepare a red envelope? What’s this?”

Lu Xianzhi flipped through the paper and beyond the print font, his own son’s signature was printed in front of the Emperor’s eyes.

Lu Xianzhi explained, “Wasn’t I the one who took care of all of He Xing’s messy properties before? Now he has settled down, It should also be taken out and given to Dean Shen for safekeeping. Besides, he’s been single for so long and finally found a partner, so he definitely needs to express his sincerity.”

His Majesty applauded, “Our Xianzhi is so thoughtful. He Xing will be moved to tears when he finds out. Look at my father, he doesn’t care about me.”

Lu Xianzhi, “…Your son hasn’t cried since he was a kid.”

He Yi, “That’s exaggerating. He’ll definitely be moved anyways. I’ll ask him in a bit.”

Vick, who pretended he didn’t exist, “…”

Lu Xianzhi gave He Yi a blank look, and they waited another minute or two before the light footsteps of the little dragon cubs came from outside the living room.

Lu Xianzhi hurriedly put together the various property certificates, put her hands on her lap and smiled.

Outside the door, Shen Mian tugged at his collar. He Xing gently held Shen Mian’s hand at an angle where the dragon cubs couldn’t see, then pushed the door directly to enter.

Shen Mian had seen He Xing’s parents during the live broadcast and He Xing would sometimes mention these two, so Shen Mian knew a bit about Lu Xianzhi and He Yi.

Shen Mian walked into the living room and immediately saw Lu Xianzhi and He Yi sitting on the sofa.

The two dragons weren’t wearing anything as formal as they were at the ceremony, but he could tell that they had seriously taken care of their appearance and were sitting on the couch looking expectant at him.

Shen Mian subconsciously stepped back and He Xing whispered, “Don’t be nervous.”

Shen Mian, “…”

Although Lu Xianzhi and He Yi had seen Shen Mian many times in the live broadcast, seeing the real person was definitely different from watching. He Yi thought about a bunch of topics about the dragon cubs in his mind, planning to throw them out to save the day as soon as it got cold- after all, from the live broadcast, Shen Mian was not a person who talked a lot.

He Yi recalled his six to seven years of experience as a dean and immediately gained confidence.

Ten seconds later, a tall and thin young human slowly appeared in front of Lu Xianzhi and He Yi.

He Yi was ready to smile and start his introductory speech when a green and gold gem dragon cub pattered in. This little dragon cub was called Gian. Gian was holding Yan Tan, Yan Tan was holding an unknown cub, the unknown cub was holding a particularly familiar cub and the particularly familiar cub was holding Xing Fei.

And Xing Fei was holding a very big crown prince.

The whole picture was- A dean walked out, followed by a big baby and little babies. Such a “spectacular” dragon managed to make He Yi forget what he was going to say- Gee, he was also a dean. How come there weren’t any little dragon cubs that would stick behind him like a little tail?

Dean Shen was far more extravagant than him, who was snatched as the dean.

Lu Xianzhi didn’t expect that the first time she would meet her son’s lover would be like this. She couldn’t help but cover her mouth and laugh.

Her son, He Xing, has already grown up. She certainly wasn’t young anymore and her body was even more deficient from too many battles in her early years, but when she smiled, the laughter in her eyes rippled out in a circle, gentle and shallow.

Time probably couldn’t be bothered to make things difficult for her, strutting around showing their preference for beauty.

Shen Mian led a string of little dragon cubs and his expression gradually changed from cold to blank: Why are you suddenly laughing? Does someone on him look off? The Empress is already laughing, should he also laugh? How do you laugh? Would it be too perfunctory if I tugged on my mouth?

Lu Xianzhi walked over to hold Shen Mian’s hand and the other held the string of little dragon cubs, who were just as dazed as the dean. With a smile, she spoke, “Sit down, sit down.”

Before Shen Mian had a chance to organise his words, he was already pinned down on the sofa and the precocious little dragon cubs calmed down, finding this atmosphere strange

He Xing naturally sat next to Shen Mian, bringing the various pastries from the table, giving a plate to each dragon cub and gave a plate to Shen Mian. In the end, there was still a small half of the pastries left on the table.

The smile on Lu Xianzhi’s mouth hadn’t disappeared yet. “Sorry, you and the little dragon cubs are just too cute.”

Dean Shen, who was 1.8-metres, had a poisonous tongue and facial paralysis, “…Thank you.”
After “calming down”, Dean Shen once again discovered that the dragon’s definition of cute was also whack.

He stood up and bowed slightly. “We were in the mock battle arena and hadn’t received any news. We have made Your Majesty and Your Highness wait.”

He Yi waved his hand. “The little dragon cubs are more important.”

Lu Xianzhi looked behind Shen Mian. “Are these little dragon cubs all from the childcare centre? Oh, apart from our Yan Tan.”

The black dragon cub had already had several cupcakes stuffed in his mouth, so he could only wag his tail at Lu Xianzhi.
The little dragon cubs of the mythical genus were loved throughout Fei Yun City. Yan Tan used to wander around Fei Yun City when he didn’t want to go home after school, so he wasn’t at all afraid of Lu Xianzhi and He Yi.

He Xing introduced them, “Xing Fei and Gian are cubs from the centre. This is Livia, he is already in primary school and is Yan Tan’s friend. This is Qin Yi, Duke of Seasonal Flowers.”

The little dragon cubs, “Good afternoon Your Majesty and Your Highness.”

Little Qin Yi had met Lu Xianzhi and He Yi a few years ago when she inherited the title, but at that time, the little dragon cub was not yet in her human form. Lu Xianzhi and He Yi found Qin Yi familiar because she looked very much like her mother.

He Yi had a slightly more serious look on his face. “It’s been a few years since we’ve seen each other. Qin Yi is now able to maintain her human form.”
Many eight-year-old dragon cubs were still learning how to maintain their human forms, but Qin Yi had actually been able to maintain it relatively stably.

Lu Xianzhi ruffled the little duke’s hair. “You should come here to play more often in the future too.”

Qin Yi smiled at Lu Xianzhi. “Thank you, Your Highness.”

Lu Xianzhi pushed the pastry in front of her towards Shen Mian. “Quickly try the dessert, this plate is our specialty. The taste isn’t bad.”

She disliked the stack of contracts in her hand and placed them on the coffee table.

He Xing glanced over them and suddenly found his signature in the bottom right corner of a certain page. He took the stack of paper. “What’s this?”

Lu Xianzhi explained, “It’s those properties of yours that you engaged in before entering the military academy. I’ve cleaned them all out for you. When you to Shen Mian’s place in the future, don’t just know how to eat. Such a big dragon, you have to be more considerate, you know?”

He Xing nodded. “I know, I know.”

Shen Mian really didn’t know what to say and was silent for a few seconds, before picking up a small piece of crisp candy and shoving it in his mouth, pretending to be busy.

He Xing casually flipped through the contract, looking at them and then placing them on Shen Mian’s lap. He flipped to the end and found a thin book with a crooked name written on it: He Xing.

He Xing had no memory of this at all. “What is this?”

Lu Xianzhi took a look at it and suddenly clapped her hands lightly. “Ah, it seems to be your childhood diary. I accidentally put it in when I was looking for the contracts.”

He Xing: ?!

Before he even turned his head, he felt his dean’s interested eyes.

Lu Xianzhi wanted to laugh at the mention of it. “The original article you submitted to Nova Magazine seems to be in there too…”

Gian and Xing Fei’s eyes slowly brightened.

Those looks were four words in He Xing’s eyes: We want to see.

He Xing, “…”

  2. Thanks for the chapter! A big hug to the poor Translator struggling with royal titles. Maybe we should consider it a bit like the British Queen Eli & her Prince hubby? A princess consort kind of situation? Languages & their peculiarities are so much fun right!?
Everyone knows who’s in charge in that family, lol, the stack of papers naturally goes to the dean, lol (+the dowry/good provider-bride price bonus depending on which side of the isle you see it). Still, to add the diary black materials, too evil! That’s a lot worse than naked baby pictures & such embarrassing parental mementos. Really evil! 🤣
That image of the row of little ducks after their “mama” was too adorable! & the silly big duck following too… 😂

  3. Thanks for the translation!

Just wanted to mention a bit about Qin Wang –
In Chinese, “huang hou” or Empress is a title specifically for the leader of the imperial harem. Empresses/noble concubines/other women were not allowed to participate in politics and could only manage the harem.

Meanwhile, “qin wang” means Prince of the First Rank (or Duke), and is a very powerful position, usually given to relatives of the imperial family OR in very very rare cases, unrelated people who have made HUGE merits or contributions to the empire.

By calling the emperor’s consort “Prince of the First Rank,” the novel is saying that s/he is very powerful (including politically) in their own right, and does not just depend on a marriage to the emperor.

I believe that Empress is fine as an English translation, just that it should be clear that this so-called “Empress” also has other titles, just like how in English Monarchy, Queen Elizabeth’s husband is ALSO the Duke of Edinburgh (and not just a queen consort).

  4. The Princess in English royalty would because she is a member of the royal family but not the one in line for the throne. Like how Queen Elizabeth is the Queen, and her husband was Duke and Prince(he was royalty from Greece) The term King or Queen is for the ruler by birth and succession.
So the heir is the one with the title.
