LBRDI Chapter 35

School Tyrant

Because of the delay in holding Usher accountable, Shen Mian and Xing Fei stayed outside for a lunch and returned to the centre around 4 pm. As soon as he arrived at the centre’s entrance, Shen Mian was rewarded with three gawking dragon cubs and… an equally gawking Crown Prince.

Shen Mian, “…”

He Xing opened the door and pulled the three overexcited cubs, “Younger sister should be sleeping right now.”

Gian vigorously nodded and raised his claws up to his mouth, “Shh-”

Lu Yuan and Yan Tan covered their mouths together and quietly walked to Shen Mian’s side, looking up at the little girl that Shen Mian was holding in his arms.

The little sister was not quite like them, she looked a little like the dean.

Xing Fei was actually already awake and because she had crumpled Shen Mian’s shirt, she had been lying on Shen Mian’s shoulder and was concentrating on smoothing it out secretly. She suddenly felt footsteps approaching and little Xing Fei turned around, but only saw an unfamiliar uncle.

Shen Mian realised she was awake, bent over and put her down.

The little girl saw the three dragon cubs, she knew Gian but she had never seen the other two before. They should probably be the new older brothers the dean was talking about.
She patted her hair, smoothed out her skirt and smiled at the three dragon cubs, “Hello, my name is Xing Fei.”

Gian stepped forward and held Xing Fei’s hands, “Welcome home.”
Xing Fei looked very different from when she left the centre, but Gian recognised his little sister from a glance.

Lu Yuan and Yan Tan stood in front of Xing Fei, their excitement slowly cooled down and they fell silent at the same time – Why was the little sister taller than them?

This was different from the little sister they had imagined.

During the first stage of development, the appearance of the cubs won’t change much and all the nutrition they get is used to develop their racial instincts. Even a large-sized dragon like Yan Tan is only a little over one meter tall now, so the Gian and the other two dragon cubs are all short and stout now. It is only in the second stage of development that the cubs skyrocket in height and weight.

Because Xing Fei is a human-dragon hybrid, her development does not distinguish between stage one and stage two.
Little Xingfei was already a little taller than all three of the dragon cubs and today she wore a pair of micro heeled shoes that made her look even taller. She was even a head taller than Yan Tan, the tallest of the three cubs.

Gian poked Lu Yuan and Yan Tan, the two dragon cubs snapped awake and gathered around Xing Fei.

Lu Yuan took out a large bag of milk candies from his pocket, “This is a limited edition milk candy, do you like it?”

Yan Tan’s gift was stuffed into Lu Yuan’s pocket. He put his claws in for a while, rummaged through the pile of random knickknacks and pulled out his own present, “I drew a picture…”

Gian felt around his pouch and took out a polished crystal spine. He felt that his gift was a little crude and was a little embarrassed, “You can use it to decorate your room.”
Gem dragons have the habit of collecting their shed scales or crystals spines, similar to how humans collect their babies teeth when they are replaced. However, gem dragons sometimes use these crystals spines and scales to rub against their scales to make their bodies shinier.

The three dragon cubs huddled together, each pair of eyes bright and full of goodwill.

Xing Fei’s eyes slowly curved, facing the enthusiastic older brothers and smiled, “Thank you.”
It’s good to be home.

Xing Fei’s dormitory was set up overnight and the overall colour palette leaned towards girly pastel colours. Shen Mian has never decorated a girl’s bedroom before. After thinking about it for ten minutes with a wooden face, Shen Mian firmly bought an entire set of pink furniture and also placed an order for a goose yellow curtain and carpet and floral patterned bed sheet sets according to the sample picture of the princess room.

As soon as the door to the dorm was opened, Gian, Lu Yuan and Yan Tan made exclamatory noises. Their dorm had already been redecorated and replaced with a full set of starry sky coloured furniture and didn’t have the same feeling as Xing Fei’s dorm.

Xing Fei walked into the bedroom. She was a cool-toned little girl and because she had poor health, she rarely saw the sun. Her skin was especially white and her tail and small horns were a deep blue. Xing Fei circled her tail around her and rubbed the tip of it, feeling that she wasn’t worthy of this room.

Lu Yuan, “I always feel like something is weird somewhere…”
The little sister is obviously beautiful, the bedroom was also beautiful, but it just seemed weird.

Yan Tan explained, “It’s called colour contrast.”

Gian held his crystal spine that was the same tone as Xing Fei, looked at it and silently put it back into his pouch.

He Xing looked at it and put a hand on Shen Mian’s shoulder, “Next time, let me choose the decoration set.”

Shen Mian, “…”
What’s wrong with pink? Do you have a problem with pink?
What’s wrong with contrast? Isn’t it fashionable?

……

Xing Fei’s luggage wasn’t much, just a suitcase, in addition to a large compressed bag of clothes, some daily necessities and most of all, a variety of books, from fairytales, mainly with pictures, to textbooks. Each one showed signs of being read many times, which didn’t seem like how much a six-year-old would read. Shen Mian also saw several diaries. He didn’t open them and piled them up on the bedside cabinet.

Xing Fei was a very quiet little girl. She prepared gifts for her three little older brothers. When the Gian and the other two looked at each other’s gifts, she sat on the carpet, looked at them and smiled.

Cetacean dragons are actually very lively dragons, but Xing Fei was not well enough to bounce around as joyfully as other cubs her age. Lu Yuan and the other two were noisy, but Xing Fei didn’t reject it at all and you could tell that she enjoys the liveliness.

Shen Mian finished packing her things without disturbing them and quietly watched them from the door for a while before slowly closing the door.

It was necessary to make an appointment for Xing Fei for a thorough examination.
Although hybrids were rare, they do exist. Both the Dragon Empire and the human civilisation have a mandatory course in the Young Dragon Education program devoted to hybrids. Shen Mian also read that in a professional book while he was reviewing – not every hybrid will have dragon features. Some hybrids were born as dragon cubs while others were born as humans. It was rare for them to get to dragonized like Xing Fei.

Dragonization usually results in fragile cubs and only after the physical dragonization ceases, then the human and dragon traits live in harmony and their health will gradually recover. This is a lengthy process that usually continues throughout their developmental period. Xing Fei’s health was already poor and every month, she had to take a certain amount of medication. Along with the burden of being dragonized on her body, Xing Fei’s condition was gradually getting worse.

The original medication was definitely no longer available, so they’ll have to get it checked again and ask the doctor to prescribe a new one.

Shen Mian went downstairs towards the kitchen as he looked up Water Star’s leading hospitals on his quantum computer.

He Xing was already in the kitchen preparing dinner. The housekeeping robot was reading the recipes and busying itself at the stove while He Xing crouched in front of the refrigerator, picking out tonight’s nutrient solutions.

Shen Mian put down his quantum computer, avoided the robot carrying the seasoning box and looked at the rice stewing in the pot and the roasted meat beside it.

“Roasted meat and rice?”

He Xing selected the nutrient solutions and pulled out a knife from the knife rack, “I’ll show you a fancy way to cut meat.”

Shen Mian, “…”
He felt that this crown prince had gone crazy, what is there to be so proud of in cutting meat?

The roast was shredded and placed on top of the rice and Shen Mian saw that he wasn’t needed there, so he went upstairs to call the four dragon cubs down for dinner.

Both Lu Yuan and Yan Tan were only children. They didn’t have any younger brothers or sisters at home so they didn’t know how to help the precious Xing Fei. One walked on the left and the other on the right, trying to hold Xing Fei’s hand, worried that the quiet little sister will fall down the stairs.

Gian couldn’t squeeze through and was anxious to the point of spinning around behind them.
The little gem dragon’s back had the words “Let me through” written all over it.

Shen Mian was silent for a few seconds then took Xing Fei’s hand. Lu Yuan and Yan Tan wilted at the same time and walked to the kitchen with Gian, their heads down.

After dinner, the location for bedtime storytelling shifted from the dragon cubs’ dorm to Shen Mian’s dorm because of the extra little girl. He Xing put the two beds together and the little dragon cubs laid on the beds, staring at the bookshelves.

Shen Mian, “Let’s change it to a fairytale today.”

He took a copy of “Lipps Fairytales” off the shelf and laid it out on the bed so the cubs could see it easier, “On a distant planet, there was someone called…”

Reading bedtime stories isn’t just about lulling the cubs to sleep, it’s also about enabling them to remember more words without being under serious conditions, which makes teaching them words during the day a lot easier, especially when “Dragon Genuses” are involved.

Lu Yuan listened with great interest. He was a dragon cub that was particularly fond of adventure stories and tended to focus on the pretty pictures and the ups and downs in the plot rather than the words themselves. That’s why Shen Mian liked to pick stories with strange treasures or stories related to planets so Lu Yuan will actively ask about how to write the names of the treasures and planets.

“The treasure contained a beautiful gem known as the Golden Gaze…”

Lu Yuan raised his hand, “Which line is Golden Gaze written on?”

You could tell that by him opening his mouth that he was just listening, not looking.

Xing Fei accurately pointed at the words with her light pink fingers, “Here.”

Lu Yuan didn’t know the word ‘ning’ and stared for a moment, still confused, “What is a gaze?”

(TN note: he didn’t know the character 凝 níng and then asked what the full word 凝视 níngshì is, which means gaze.)

Xing Fei softly explained, “To gaze is to look intently, without blinking.”

Lu Yuan looked at Xing Fei dumbly, “You recognise it?”

Xing Fei, who had written several diaries, nodded.

Lu Yuan looked at Gian and Yan Tan, “Do you all recognise it?”

The words in the fairytale were within the range of vocabulary that they needed to master in kindergarten. Ther older cubs are perfectly capable of reading on their own.

Yan Tan was a few grades ahead of them, so of course he knew all these basic vocabulary words.

Gian was an elementary school tyrant. The words in the storybooks were completely within his cognitive range and he could have read them on his own if he hadn’t been glued to Shen Mian.

Lu Yuan carefully turned a page and pointed at a word he couldn’t comprehend, “Do you also know this?”

The three little dragon cubs said in unison, “The boiling dragon, a dragon under the flame dragon genus.”

Lu Yuan’s claws began to tremble: Why, why does even the little sister younger than me know more words than I do? Am I the cub with the worst grades?

Gian tried to comfort Lu Yuan, “Actually, I’ve already read this book, that’s why I know the words.”

Instead of feeling comforted, Lu Yuan received a second blow.

“But I can’t even read this book.”

Xing Fei, “…”
The half-dragon girl looked down at the book and got confused: Is this book that difficult?

Seeing that the little dragon cub was about to start suspecting his own life, Shen Mian quickly smoothed out Lu Yuan’s fur.

He Xing, who was lying on the side, felt the little Lu Yuan collapsing and freed one hand to pat Lu Yuan, “At least you can realise that you can’t read this book, right?”

Lu Yuan sniffed, “Are you comforting me?”

Shen Mian picked Lu Yuan up and placed him on He Xing’s chest, causing him to cough a few times.
“He’s not comforting you, he’s just hitting you.”

The around two hundred catty little dragon cub wiggled his body around and was aggrieved like a black and white glutinous rice ball.

He was only a little heavy.

The author has something to say:

Qiming Childcare Centre: Except for Lu Yuan, everyone else in the centre is a school tyrant.

Of the four cubs in the entire centre, Gian and Xing Fei are curve wreckers, Yan Tan is a school tyrant and only Lu Yuan is a flunkie.

  1. Lu Yuan don’t be sad, everyone are born with different talents and ability. Yours just doesn’t involve academic. Maybe sport or something. Like me. Academic and art & literature. Just rusty. Don’t be discouraged and work hard to hone your skill and achieve your dream… Just… Don’t sure if you can achieve it in this lifetime. Thanks for the chapter ~

    1. His talent is in business, he’s got people skills & selling skills, lol. He’s actually quite smart in a very eccentric way. He just needs more focus & a better attention span to catch up. He just doesn’t concentrate on what he doesn’t like.

  2. … I went to a Chinese kindergarden and primary school and I can’t even read 凝… *doubting life*
It just looks like 疑 with two dots on the side to me. … oh well. This is what happens when I don’t read the language often.

I love when the author slips in little behaviors like this that seem like things an actual child might do.

I think authors do need to use some creative liberties when writing kids, because kids aren’t super good at things like talking in complete sentences, not getting super cranky, staying focused etc. But a lot of authors overdo it and write kids as either perfect angels or adults but smaller. It’s refreshing to read a novel like this where the kids do actually remind you of real children.
