Chapter 1

When Hiromu was younger, there was always a scene that plagued his mind. On the way to school, there was an area of private land surrounded by forest, with a road leading to the back. There was a fence, and the path was narrow, barely able to fit a single person, with surrounding greenery closing in like a paper cut-out, so he never dared to go in.

The scintillating summer sky was visible from the back of the dark road, but the glare of the sun meant he could only imagine a vast sea extending under the wispy white clouds; a sea reflecting the azure sky, dyed crimson at dusk by the setting sun. In reality, it was just another residential area, invisible even from the height of the school roof. 

Now a high school student, Kayano Hiromu gazed upon the bewitching scene, allowing the timeless scene to wash over him, lamenting a vast sea that could never exist. 

Toei Academy was a elite boarding school for junior and senior high school students, located along Sagami Bay in the metropolitan area of Shonan, Kanagawa prefecture. Admission fees were expensive, academic results alone could not ensure you a place. The school building and dormitories were built from the former headmaster’s villa, and resembled a high class apartment complex.

If there wasn’t a gym and school ground, no one would think that it was a school at all. In the basement was a pool and a spa. On the first floor was a multipurpose hall and a lounge for family visits, there was even a cleaning service and room service. 

Hiromu sighed, holding a tray with an omelette and a salad, he scanned his surroundings for an empty seat. It was lunch break, but he’d just returned from the library, so there were not many seats left. While there were sporadic scatterings of vacant seating, they were guarded by glares and scowls. Hiromu glanced at an empty seat near the window, where there were already people talking. It was a table of 8, with 3 people in the same year as Hiromu and four upperclassmen. However all of them had prestigious titles, such as the school dux, and student council president.

What a terrifying world this is.

Surrounding the empty seat was a dense aura of ice, glaring down any contender wishing to sit in it. Such an exalted position, no one was allowed to occupy it unless specifically invited. Hiromu continued to absentmindedly glance around, before accidentally locking eyes with Reichi Fushio. 

At just over 180cm, with high hips and long limbs; down-like, layered hair, glossy even in the harsh lighting of the cafeteria, and eyes a deep amber hue. Fushio had the appearance of a model. He was famous. Not only at Toei Academy but also at schools all around Shonan, all within a few days of entering the academy. It is rumoured that while he is intimidating to approach, he never stops smiling once you get to know him.

That smile always dissolves as soon as he sees Hiromu.

Even now, Fushio looked away with a scowl.
